If you’re trading with a prop firm, you already know that staying ahead often comes down to the little advantages-like having the right indicators at your fingertips. MT5 is incredibly versatile, but sometimes to really make it sing, you need to go beyond the standard, built-in indicators and bring in some custom ones. Custom indicators can help you spot patterns, fine-tune entries and exits, or even just give you that extra edge when markets get choppy.

And the good news is that setting them up is not rocket science. If you follow this step-by-step guide, you will be operational in no time, and your trading dashboard will feel much more personalized.

Step 1: Find the Right Custom Indicator

The first step you want to take is to obtain the indicator itself. Believe me, there’s a lot of places to find them, from free forums to commercial solutions. When searching for an indicator, you want to ensure you understand what the indicator is supposed to accomplish and is compatible with your MT5 software—oftentimes, indicators from MT4 need to be converted.

Pro tip for prop traders: Before you use an indicator on your actual trading environment, it has to be thoroughly tested on your demo account.

Step 2: Download and Check the Files

Custom MetaTrader 5 indicators can come in one of these two forms:

.ex5 (the compiled version/executable) or

.mq5 (the source code). If you find that it comes in both forms, you would simply need to have the

The .mq5 file is useful if you want to tweak it or learn how it works.

Now, once you have downloaded these files, it’s important that they are all stored in a location that makes it easy for you to access them. A location like Downloads/MT5Indicators is perfectly acceptable. It doesn’t make sense for them to be scattered all around different locations on your computer.

Step 3: Open Your MT5 Platform

If you’re working with it for the prop firm, odds are you’re already logged into your funded or your demo account. That’s great—and just make sure you’re logged into the right one for the indicator to run.

Step 4: Open the Data Folder

Here comes the thing where most newbies get slightly confused. If you are intending to install a custom indicator, you must access the MT5 ‘Data Folder.’

Go to File in the top-left corner.

Open Data Folder.

This will open the core folder where MT5 holds all your indicators, templates, scripts, and profiles. You might want to consider it your “control center” where you can manage your platform.

Step 5: Find the Indicators Folder

Go to “Data Folder”, and then:

MQL5 -> Indicators

This is where your indicators, both custom and generic, reside. You can choose to create subfolders here if you desire, although for most traders, simply dropping the file here will do the trick.

Step 6: Copy Your Indicator Files

Now, grab the .ex5 (or .mq5) file you downloaded earlier and paste it into the Indicators folder. If MT5 is open while you do this, don’t panic—you just need to refresh the navigator later.

Step 7: Refresh MT5 or Restart

For MT5 to recognize your new indicator, you have two options:

  1. Restart MT5 completely.
  2. Or, in the Navigator panel (usually on the left side), right-click Indicators and select Refresh.

Either method works. After this, your indicator should show up in the list, ready to be applied to any chart.

Step 8: Add the Indicator to a Chart

Time to put your new tool to work. Open the chart you want, then:

  • In the Navigator panel, expand Indicators.
  • Find your custom indicator.
  • Drag it onto your chart or double-click it.

A settings window will pop up. Here’s where you can tweak inputs—colors, periods, sensitivity, etc.—depending on what the indicator does.

Quick tip: don’t just leave everything at default unless you understand the settings. Customizing these inputs can make a big difference in how the indicator behaves in live markets.

Step 9: Save Your Chart Template

And if you have adjusted some settings on the indicator you like the look of, save that as a chart template. This saves you from doing all that again next time you create a chart.

  • Right click on the graph
  • Select Template ⇨ Save Template
  • Assign it a memorable name, such as EURUSD_Scalping or Momentum_Tracker.

Templates are particularly helpful in the case of instant funding prop firm traders who may trade a number of different strategies or instruments at the same time.

Step 10: Test the Indicator

Just like with anything new, a little research is required before using it to make trades. See how it works on past charts, test it on a demo, or see if it complements what I am trying to do as far as trading is concerned.

Just remember, indicators do not trade for you, they’re a tool. You’ll still need your analysis, your risk strategies, your trading plan in making decisions. Discipline does not need replacement by a new indicator, it can enhance your edge with proper use.

Bonus Tips for Prop Traders

  1. Organize your indicators: When you’re juggling multiple strategies, it’s easy to get lost in a sea of indicators. Create folders like “Momentum,” “Trend,” or “Volatility” to keep everything neat.
  2. Keep backups: Custom indicators can sometimes get deleted or corrupted. Make a backup folder outside of MT5 so you can restore them quickly.
  3. Check for updates: Developers occasionally release updated versions that fix bugs or improve performance. Stay on top of this to avoid unexpected behavior during live trading.
  4. Combine smartly: Don’t overload your chart. Using five or six indicators at once can confuse more than it helps. Stick to the ones that give you meaningful insights.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Even experienced traders slip up when adding custom indicators. Here’s what to watch out for:

  • Wrong folder: Make sure the files go in MQL5 → Indicators. Putting them in the Scripts folder won’t work.
  • Skipping refresh: MT5 won’t see new indicators until you refresh or restart.
  • Ignoring settings: Default inputs aren’t always ideal—especially for volatile markets or specific currency pairs.
  • Testing on live accounts immediately: Always demo first. Even solid indicators can behave differently depending on market conditions.
